Class Procedures
Warm-up Activity
- Come to class on time gather the materials you need to work. Place your cell phones in box by the door or leave them in your backpacks on silent. Each Tuesday you will place your homework in your homework tray. If you’re late, go to the office for your tardy slip before entering the classroom. This is the time for you to sharpen pencils, have absentee slips signed, and to get makeup work. There really should be no talking during this time.
Directions and Discussion (D & D)
- During this short time, I will be giving important directions or demonstrating something you will be doing that day. The day’s objectives will be given and major concepts will be discussed.
Class time
- Your work on your projects will take the majority of the class time. While I expect a low noise level, you can talk to your classmates as you work or get out of your seat as needed. My number one rule is never say “I Can’t”. You must try to create to the best of your ability.
Cleanup and Closure (C & C)
- The last 5-10 minutes of class are for cleaning up. Everyone is responsible for cleaning up their own work area and leaving it cleaner then they found it. All class supplies should be returned in their appropriate place. Sometimes I may need to review some major concepts in C & C and other times we may review.
Homework
- Due every Tuesday Moodle is part of HW read your assignment on Friday complete and return the following Tuesday 100 points. Wednesday 50 points and a 0 for any day after.
Safety and Guidelines
- Do not run or fool around in the classroom with scissors, compasses or other tools.
- Use X-acto knives only after demonstration and in designated areas with cardboard or something under while cutting so you won’t cut the table.
- Wipe up any water spills.
- If unsure about how to use a tool – ask!
- Avoid creating clay dust – place damp newspaper or burlap on the work surface, wet sponge to clean area, no sanding.
- Do not use the art room as a lunchroom- no food nor drink!
- Keep your work area clean and leave it cleaner than you found it.
- After you have cleaned your area, wash your hands at the end of class.
- Never use products for skin painting unless the product is meant to be used in that way.
- Do not dispose materials down the drain unless so indicated (especially clay slip, plaster, turpentine, etc.).
Course Description
This course introduces the elements and principles of design through an exploration of a broad range of media. Activities emphasize skills and techniques in the following areas: drawing, painting, graphics, fibers, ceramics, and three-dimensional design. The visual problems in Art I. are designed to increase students’ critical and creative thinking skills that are necessary for understanding the history and production of art.
I’m excited to have the chance to work with you this semester. This handout is to give you a brief idea of my expectations of you as an art student, my grading system, and what kind of projects we will be doing in Art I
Supply Fee ($65.00 per semester)- Due: Sep.22 & Jan. 15 * user fees
Class Materials
- Drawing portfolio (classroom use only)
- Paper
- Wooden pencil
- Good white eraser
- Sketchbook- wired (homework) with case
- Ruler
- Colore pencils and markers
- Paint box with brushes and pallet
Optional for at home for HW
- Colored pencils
- Any of your own art materials to supplement lessons.
Grades
I believe students should know ahead of time how they will be graded. You will receive a worksheet at the beginning of each project which gives directions for completing it and a rubric of how it will be graded. Before any quiz or test, I will give a study guide with the important terms and concepts for that test. I am expecting high grades in Art I. because I tell you how you can achieve them! Grades are posted on-line weekly. I will also give letters home later on in the grading period for anyone missing work. Your final grade can basically be broken down into the following parts:
- Projects 25 points
- Daily Classwork (written assignments, participation, etc) 25 points
- Moodle and Sketchbook 100 points

Mission Statement
The mission of the Foothill Christian High School Fine Arts Department is to provide a Christ-centered curriculum that inspires, equips, and empowers students to discover, develop, and demonstrate their God-given talents while establishing a life-long appreciation for the arts.
Department Philosophy

Vision Statement
Our vision is to provide the students with an understanding of the Biblical foundation for the arts. God is the Ultimate Creator, and man has the gift of creativity. God gives to the artist all the necessary gift of creativity. Art and performing though music and dance is for God’s glory. To develop the student’s creative self-expression and to teach the student that art can take many forms. Develop the student’s talents in an attitude of stewardship and thankfulness to the Lord. To develop an understanding of our art heritage and the world views reflected in the works of artists, past and present. Introduce students to careers in the fields of visual and performing arts.
Long-Range Goals
We will accomplish our vision by:
- Creating a program in which colleges and universities actively seek our fine arts students
- Partnering with other educational institutions to expand student exposure to the arts
- Serving the community at-large through fine arts programs and activities
