ASL II
A.S.L. II Course Outcomes
Students will:
- Be able to use additional signs for daily living.
- Be able to use the manual alphabet in a fluid manner where needed.
- Be able to translate from English to A.S.L.
- Be more aware of deaf culture issues through assigned reading.
- Deaf culture and have had opportunity to communicate with native signers.
A.S.L. II Course Objectives
This course builds on the vocabulary translation skills learned in A.S.L. I. The text emphasizes interpreting a two-dimensional signed model. Unit scenarios again are based on live situations. Deaf culture is further explored through assigned readings as well as exposure to and interaction with native signers. Quarterly projects are designed to extend learning beyond the text to personal discovery.

- Book Report on A Loss for Words.
- Memorize and perform a song.
- Translate a children’s book.
- Deaf culture interaction field trip.
A.S.L. II Instructional Methods
- Students begin the second year by reading a book which reveals a more in depth understanding of deaf culture culminating with a book report.
- This year’s text continues development of vocabulary by integrating it into real-life dialogues.
- There are also weekly intensive interpreting exercises, both A.S.L. to English and English to A.S.L.
- Skill practice in the use of manual alphabet and signed numbers is built into weekly lessons.
- Proficiency assessments are done through weekly interpreting, quizzes, a report, and quarterly projects.
- One deaf culture interaction experience component is required. A class field trip will be arranged.

- Utilize book for translation.
- Study for quizzes.
- Perform assigned readings.
- Scheduled availability for deaf culture interaction.
