TEC-101 Tech Foundations – one year course

This is an introductory course that focuses on the primary computer skills needed by all high school and college students.  The students who successfully complete this course will have an understanding of the hardware components that make up the computer and their necessary interaction with each other.  These students will be able to use an Internet browser to log in to Web sites and portals that require user-name and password authentication; understand the ethics, copyright law, and viruses, and outline typical preventative or corrective measures to minimize these problems.  They will have a good working knowledge of Windows 7, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel; be able to convert these documents to Adobe Acrobat PDF format, and send files electronically via email and Web site uploading.  They will be able to present the results of research using Microsoft PowerPoint.  They will be able to use the features of Microsoft Windows to create, edit, store, and search for files on a personal computer.  Students will also demonstrate an understanding of photo editing including image size, resolution, quality, and various techniques including animated .gifs.  Students will create a three minute documentary using film editing software.  New technologies will be discussed.  Students will be introduced to the Mac as well.
