Junior High

In the 7th and 8th grades at any school, students face the challenge of transitioning into adolescence. At Foothills Christian Junior High School, we whole-heartedly believe that this transition involving physical changes, intellectual development, and spiritual formation can be, with wise and loving guidance, a positive, even course-altering season in a student’s life. Teachers take great care to impart sound biblical wisdom during Bible class and desire to help shape the students’ appetites for the things of the Kingdom of God.

Our graded course-work includes the following subjects: Bible, math, language arts (grammar, literature, vocabulary, and writing), history, science, conversational spanish, and computers.

MATHEMATICS:

Every subject at FCJHS is viewed and taught with the Bible as a lens, and mathematics is no exception. The beauty and consistency of mathematical properties reflects the orderliness and precision of our unchanging God, and we would be amiss not to teach it in this light. Math courses are not lock-stepped and students are placed according to diagnostic test results. Courses available are BJU Fundamental Math, BJU Math 7, BJU Pre-Algebra, and McDougal-Littel Algebra I, to be mastered in that order.

GRAMMAR (Bob Jones University Press)

In grammar classes, students are challenged to fine-tune their use of one of God’s most amazing creations, human language. Seventh grade grammar covers the parts of speech, requires the analysis of sentence structure, and develops the students’ proper use of words. Eighth grade grammar strengthens the students’ understanding and builds upon those same concepts.

LITERATURE (Bob Jones University Press)

Classic and contemporary literature selections provided in the literature course textbooks are thoughtfully chosen poems, novel excerpts, essays, and short stories. Class discussions are geared toward aiding the students in critical analysis, thinking biblically, and understanding effective literary techniques.

HISTORY (Bob Jones University Press)

World history and American history are taught in 7th and 8th grade, respectively. The material is presented from a Christian perspective, helping students to see the hand of God in the events of history and particularly in the development of our own nation. The highlight of the junior high history experience is the annual 8th grade tour of Washington D.C. and other historic sites back east.

WRITING (WriteShop)

For writing skills development, students are guided through a two-year course wherein a student acquires the skills needed to communicate descriptively, persuasively, and logically.

VOCABULARY (Great Source/Houghton-Mifflin)

This program emphasizes the application of word meaning and draws words primarily from SAT’s and books of frequently used words.

SCIENCE (Bob Jones University Press)

7th Grade-The living world with all its wonders is presented from a biblical worldview, studying organism classification, cellular biology, genetics, and the differences between Creation and evolution.

8th Grade-Examine God’s handiwork in the heavens.  Students will see the perfection of God’s design in a study of the earth including the atmosphere, the lithosphere, and the hydrosphere.

JUNIOR HIGH SPORTS PROGRAMS

After-school sports programs are available. We offer boys’ flag football and girls’ volleyball in the fall. In the winter, we offer both boys’ and girls’ basketball.
