Sixth Grade
Our goal in 6th grade is to partner with Christian parents to provide an education that encourages spiritual growth and character formation as well as academic attainment. We begin our day with instruction from God’s Word with the use of Abeka Bible Stories. For Math we use Abeka with the teach/reteach approach with emphasis on problem solving, percents, basic geometry, measures, fractions, decimals, beginning algebra, graphics, and practical arithmetic such as banking.
For English, we use Bob Jones English 6 which focuses on an appreciation of language as a gift from God. The language chapters are integrated with writing chapters which carry different themes to help connect different subject areas together. Combining BJU English with BJU Spelling helps develop strong phonics principles emphasizing the understanding of patterns, rather than memorizing lists of words.
Rounding out our curriculum, we use Abeka Health for science focusing on the study of the endocrine, immune and nervous systems, as well as spiritual, physical, and mental wellness. History curriculum used in the classroom is Bob Jones University Press Heritage Studies promoting the knowledge of God with historic and geographical literacy. It emphasizes Christian philosophy, character, and attitudes while promoting a balanced approach to social studies instruction.
Students will derive knowledge through practical experiences that involve the “hands-on” or “learning by doing” activities. Students also enjoy BJU handwriting concentrating on learning the art of calligraphy throughout the year. Our Literature program teaches biblical principles and discernment for everyday living as well as develops greater thinking skills thus giving them an appreciation for reading. Scripture memorization serves as the foundation for storing up God’s Word in their hearts.
In March of every year, we attend 6th grade camp at Indian Hills Camp. Their time there includes a study workbook focusing on God’s Creation.
